Burning Rituals

To fully enjoy your candle and guarantee optimal use we recommend you do as follows…..

Wicks should be trimmed regularly (preferably with wick trimmers)and not exceed 0.5 cm
(allowing the wick to stay long may make the candle smoke)

On the first burning of your candle allow the whole of the wax surface to melt to the edge of the glass
(this allows the future burnings to follow the first melt and avoid tunnelling)

Once the whole surface is a melted wax it is best not to burn for more than one hour
(a candle that burns for too long may over heat )

When the candle is 1cm away from the bottom of its jar it should be extinguished
(it may become too hot and crack the glass)

Between each burning session try to keep the wick central and upright
(allows for a better and even burn each time)

Regularly wipe the inside of the glass ,when the wax is hard
(this helps to avoid the appearance and build up of soot)

Safety & Care

  • Burn within sight
  • Keep away from flammable objects
  • Keep away from children and pets
  • Do not place near a source of heat
  • Place on a heat resistant surface
  • Trim the wick to 1/2 cm between burns
  • Avoid burning in draughty areas
  • Keep the surface wax free of debris
  • Always extinguish a candle if :  It lets off a lot of smoke / Flickers continuously / The flame becomes too high / When it is close to the bottom of the glass

FAQs

WHAT IS THE BEST WAY TO BURN A COMMUCCI CANDLE?

We recommend the burn time is no more than 3-4 hours.  Be sure to trim the wick to 5mm before each lighting to prevent the wick curling into the melted wax.  Trim your wick with a simple finger pinch( once cooled) or by using scissors or ideally wick trimmers.  Always allow the melt pool to reach the edges of the jar before extinguishing. ,doing so not only allows for even burning, but prevents “tunneling” and wax from building along the sides of the jar, ensuring product quality and longevity!

HOW SHOULD I EXTINGUISH MY CANDLE?

A proper wick snuffer works great.  Never attempt to extinguish a candle using water!

WHAT INGREDIENTS ARE IN COMMUCCI CANDLES?

Our wax is 100% natural and soy based. We use a mix of fragrance oils & essential oils, and a cotton/paper wick.

WHY SOY WAX?

We use a 100% natural soy wax mix for a variety of reasons. It’s a renewable resource and carbon neutral. It burns cooler & more cleanly for a longer period of time than paraffin waxes!  It’s a natural and non-toxic product.

WHY IS SOY WAX BETTER THAN OTHER WAX ?

Candles were originally made from paraffin, a derivative from oil. It still is the cheaper option but it is an unsustainable resource and candles made from it are proven bad for our health. Soy wax (or soya wax) comes from the husks of the soya plant. This can be regrown therefore making it more sustainable and better for the environment. It also burns smokeless and is safe for asthmatics.

DO YOU USE ESSENTIAL OILS IN YOUR CANDLES?

Our candles use a special mix of oils that contain a high component of essential oils, but we do not use straight essential oils. A mix of fragrance oils and essential oils are preferred for use in candles, as the scent throw is better.  Essential oils can be volatile compounds, which makes it difficult to maintain consistency during production as they’re likely to change over time.  Essential oils also tend to evaporate when they are burned because their flash point is low.

WHAT SIZE ARE COMMUCCI CANDLES?

Our candles are 300ml (wax by volume)11cm high x 9cm diameter.

HOW FRAGRANT ARE COMMUCCI CANDLES?

We believe candles should not be over powering, much like anything in life !

DO YOU OR YOUR SUPPLIERS TEST ON ANIMALS?

We nor our suppliers engage in animal testing.

IS YOUR PACKAGING RECYCLED OR RECYCLABLE?

Some of our postage packaging is from a recycled source and all of our packaging is re-usable or recyclable, we do not use any single use plastics. We created our candle box lid to be used as a tray to place your candle in, or use it as a small piece of artwork on the wall or even as a bedside jewellery tray. The candle glass when empty can be washed and re-used to burn tea lights or hold make up brushes/pencils or anything your imagination conjures.

WHAT IS SCENT THROW?

The scent throw of a candle is how far the fragrance reaches around the space you are lighting it in. There is ‘cold throw’, which is how strong the scent is when unlit, and there is ‘hot/warm throw’, which is how strong it is when lit.

HOW LONG SHOULD I BURN A SOY WAX CANDLE FOR?

It is advisable that our candles should not be burnt for more than 3-4  hours at a time. After 4 hours they should be safely extinguished and allowed to cool before relighting again. The reason for this is, if you power burn the candle (more than 4 hours), the wax can overheat, change colour and give rise to an uneven melt throughout.

WHAT LENGTH SHOULD THE WICK BE?

0.5cm in length, any longer and the flame will flicker and over heat, any shorter the flame won’t be big enough and you will get an uneven melt and tunnelling. Trim the wick with  scissors or preferably wick trimmers when the candle is unlit!

WHY IS THE WAX ONLY MELTING ON ONE SIDE?

This is most likely due to the wick curling over and directing the heat more to one side than the other. The wick can be gently pushed over (to the centre of the glass) with a metal point when lit if this happens but avoid bending the wick when cool as it can break off. We would suggest trimming the wick to 0.5cm before you light it.

THE FLAME IS FLICKERING, WHAT CAN I DO?

  • The wick may be too long
  • There may be a draft.
  • There may be another candle creating a heat draft and disrupting the airflow.

We suggest you extinguish the flame, trim the wick (0.5 cm) with scissors if necessary or ensure there is no draft before relighting.
